Wine Salon

Winemaker Miguel Martin leads a Wine Salon at Palmer Vineyards, Sept. 10

HARVEST 2011 started with Wine Salon programs on Saturdays, September 3, 10 and 17. These informal educational sessions offered attendees an opportunity to drink in knowledge on winemaking and tasting, food-and-wine pairing, and more in programs at wineries and other locations across the East End.

A sampling of some of the terrific programs that took place appears below. Tickets were just $25 per person per program.

10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Cheese, Please! The Magic of Wine and Cheese
Everyone knows that wine and cheese go together, but some wines paired with some cheeses make for mouth-watering magic. What are the best wine-and-cheese pairings, and why do they work so well? Let Sherwood House Vineyards’ winemaker Gilles Martin and Artisanal Cheese fromager Max McCalman be your guides. Program will be held in the beautiful barn behind the tasting room. Sponsored by Artisanal Cheese.
Speakers: Gilles Martin and Max McCalman
Location: Sherwood House Vineyards – Jamesport Tasting Room
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Does the Glass Make a Difference? The Riedel Challenge
Join Maximilian Riedel, CEO of Riedel Crystal of America for the tasting that will change the way you drink wine. The theory behind the design of Riedel crystal—from the shape of the bowl to the design of the rim—is that the glass affects the aroma, taste and harmony of a wine on its journey from glass to palate. Experience it firsthand! Participants will take home their tasting set from Riedel’s Vinum series (a $124 value) and are invited to join Mr. Riedel for a reception following the program. (Please note: Tickets for this program are $75 per person.)
Speaker: Maximilian Riedel
Location: Hotel Indigo, 1830 W. Main St., Route 25, Riverhead
12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. Four on the Flora: Local Flavor, Four Ways
Ever game for a culinary challenge, Waters Crest Winery owner and winemaker Jim Waters teams with chef Tom Fazio (Waterside Caterers) to create four flavorful dishes to pair with four great wines, all sourced from within four square miles of the winery! Witness the bounty of Long Island on a small scale.
Speakers: Jim Waters and Tom Fazio
Location: Waters Crest Winery, Cutchogue
1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. From Sea to Shore: Pairing Shellfish and Wine
Join Jamesport Vineyards’ owner and winemaker Ron Goerler, Jr., for a tasting of Long Island clams, oysters and scallops paired with Jamesport’s award-winning wines. With shellfish from different local waters, explore how the concept of terroir applies to our aquaculture as well as viticulture. (Note: The shellfish are served raw.)
Speaker: Ron Goerler
Location: Jamesport Vineyards, Jamesport
1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Cellaring: Long Life to Long Island Wines

Experience the optimum conditions for storing wines, discover how long wines should be aged and taste examples of older local vintages. Sponsored by Maran Corporate Risk Associates.
